There are tons of open source frameworks to create cost effect web UI automation tests. All we have to do is to perfectly connect the dots.

Puppeteer

Puppeteer is a Node library which provides a high-level API to control Chromium or Chrome over the DevTools Protocol. This will be used as an Orchestrator for our UI automation testing. Puppeteer is a google?s framework

Playwright

Playwright is a Node library to automa t e Chromium, Firefox and WebKit(WebKit is the web browser engine used by Safari, Mail, App Store, and many other apps on macOS, iOS, and Linux) with a single API. Playwright is built to enable cross-browser web automation that is ever-green, capable, reliable and fast. Playwright is Microsoft's alternate for Puppeteer.

Mocha

Mocha is a feature-rich JavaScript test framework running on Node.js and in the browser, making asynchronous testing simple and fun.

Chai is a BDD / TDD assertion library for node and the browser that can be delightfully paired with any javascript testing framework.

Azure Devops

We will use azure devops to show CI/CD integration.

Browserless (https://www.browserless.io/)

Fast, scalable, and reliable browser automation. Make headless automation your competitive advantage. browserless takes care of all the dependencies, sand-boxing, and management of the web browser. You can connect remotely and automate it with open-source libraries, using our pre-built REST APIs, or write and run your own functions.

Let write some UI automation test scripts using Puppeteer. You need to do all the initialization in the boostrap.js. Refer below sample bootstrap.js.

Refer below the packages.json to look and see the all the packages required to successfully do this work

Create simple UI test using google.com to check its title.

Once you compile and run the project using VS code, you will be able to see the test results displayed in the console. But the intention of this article is to show the azure devops integration and the end to end configuration so that the tests are ran as part of the devops pipeline.

Refer below the steps for azure devops configuration.

Once the release pipeline is completed, you will be able to see the test result in the below format.

On the closing thoughts we have designed a enterprise class UI automation framework using puppeteer, mocha, chai and browserless. This is a very cost effective framework and does a good job of meeting all our requirement. Puppeteer is a cool tool and very easy to learn. Since this is a JS based framework, we dont need to carry a lot of configuration steps and big frameworks and dependencies. This is lightweight testing framework. Only cost involved here is the license fee for Browserless which is very minimal. With Puppeteer we can cover only chrome browser, but we can use playwright (another node based JS library for web UI automation)which has capability to cover all the modern browsers. Playwright has very similar APIs like puppeteer.
